Reliable witnesses have reported hearing the sounds of battles long past. It is as though the noise of battle is being transmitted from the past by some unknown form of energy.

In August 1951, two Englishwomen, Mrs. Dorothy N. and her sister-in-law Miss Agnes N., were on vacation at the seaside village of Puys, near Dieppe, in Normandy, France. At about 4 oclock in the early hours of August 4, the women claimed that they were suddenly awakened by the sound of gunfire, the whine of planes dive-bombing, and mens cries.

Sounds of war

Over the next three hours they listened, appalled by what was later identified as an apparent blow-by-blow replay of a Second World War battle: the Canadian and British raid on the German-held port Dieppe. The night-time attack on August 19, 1942, was bloody and unsuccessful, and of 6,086 Allied troops who participated in the attack, there were 3,623 casualties.

Uncannily similiar

The two women - who happened to be staying in a house used by German troops during the war - made detailed notes of what they heard, and from these they later wrote statements describing their experience. They sent their accounts to the Society for Psychical Research, which published a report on them in the May - June 1952 issue of its journal.

In its investigation of the case, which it termed a collective auditory hallucination attributable to psi, (parapsychological mind powers), the society consulted Allied military records. These showed that the womens account of the battle followed closely the timetable of the raid on Dieppe that had taken place nine years earlier, part of it at Puys.
